My job interview fiasco

21 Jul

I’m pissed off tonight. I went to an affiliate event organised by the A4UForum which was, minus the incident that I am going to talk about, a very good event & I had a good time.

My main problem was a guy called Simon, an Aussie who owns a company that sells designer underwear. He wanted to speak to me about a job proposition he had available (after hearing good things about me) and although I wasn’t interested for a number of reasons, I reluctantly agreed to listen to what he had to say, even if it was just to get him off my back.

I could not believe the audacity of the guy. As soon as we had sat down he started speaking about how much he values loyalty and how people that worked for his dad had been with the company for 30 years and he wants people with the same kind of personality (which was quite ironic when he was trying to convince me to leave my currently company). After speaking about Loyalty & asking about my family (when I mentioned having children) he asked me how much longer I thought I would live for if I was drinking, smoking and being very overweight – what right does a guy who I have never met before come up to me and speak to me like that?

It didn’t end there (although I should have told him where to go straight away). He started saying to me that I’ll be in hospital by the time I am 30 and lecturing me about the way I was running my life (even though I hardly ever drink and was only having a cigarette to complement the beer that I was having – I never smoke at home or at work). Then he tells me a story about a guy that went for an interview with him a year or so ago; apparently this bloke was overweight like myself and didn’t get the job for that reason; apparently the poor guy told Simon that he was going to the gym but a year on after the interview he was still the same size.

Surely it’s illegal to not give someone a job because of their weight? Obviously it’s a hard one to prove, but I was still gob smacked.

He also then tells me that he would only employee people younger than him (he was about 35 I guess) because it makes him feel younger.

What a way to run a business.

I was speaking to him for about 30 minutes in all – a complete waste of time and I can only hope (and guess) that his company will fail if he has that kind of attitude when looking to take someone on board.

My past few days

10 Jul

It’s been a weird few days. I last posted on Wednesday 6th, the day that London won the bid for the 2012 Olympic games; being in London that is great news for the family and I.

Then Thursday came about – browsing though the BBS as I often do, I saw a message about an explosion in London at Liverpool Street station – within hours there had been multiple explosions on both the underground and a London bus. Terrorists had attacked the UK like so many people feared they would. I won’t go into too many details as it’s all over the news, thankfully all my family & friends seem to be safe and London will pull though and hopefully catch the evil scum that did this.

Friday was a bit of a nothing day – had to take Lindsey to the doctors so got into work around 12.45. Paul & Lorraine came round in the evening and we got a Pizza from Asda and played a bit of football on the xbox.

On Saturday evening we went out to a BBQ at a friend from works house; it just goes to show what a close knit team we are when everyone was invited along to celebrate her engagement – it’s nothing like at Onetel which is definitely a good thing! Kieran took over everyones attention again – his latest exploit was playing on Sally’s Didgeridoo!

On Sunday we went to pick up a new double pram from Whistable and then went on to Ramsgate. The weather was about 32 degrees (hot for England!) so we played with the sand on the beach and then went and strolled round the harbour.

I love google

6 Jul

I really love google. I had a fantastic e-mail from them today that I’m still finding it hard to get over!

At work i’ve started an Adwords campaign – the spend on this account is quite low, but we’ve got quite a few words / phrases that we’re targetting (about 40 at the moment).

I heard on the grapevine that google are offering an optimisation service for free, but only on invite. I decided to challenge this and contacted google adwords and was told that they will optimise my adwords for free and give me the results in 24-48 hours.

What fantastic customer service – just one more thing that google are doing right; I just hope that the optimisation works and we see some more sales, if so, i’ll love them for life.

XBox Hacker nicked

A 22-year-old man has become the first person in the UK to be convicted for modifying a video games console.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see an issue with “chipping” an xbox. For the record I have done the same & installed a 200GB Hard Disk. It’s not for hacking into games, it’s to turn the xbox into a full multimedia centre, allowing me to play MP3’s, Divx and other files & link it up with the network. Very short sighted to make it against the law – MS should of offered upgrades to provide this kind of service really.

The bloke that was charged for this is very silly; I wonder if he would of still been charged if he wasn’t pre-installing games.

Websites alienate Firefox users

4 Jul

One in 10 UK websites fail to work properly on the open source Firefox web browser, a study shows.

You will be happy to know that this site does work on Firefox. I only ever use Firefox as a browser now and as such if I came across a site that Firefox didn’t work on, I wouldn’t return. One day more companies will realise that I am not the only person that has this view; users want a choice of browsers and alienating them will not help.

Wierd search results

I’ve had quite a few people visiting my site that have been searching for Little April, a teenage porn star of sorts it seems.

If you have been searching for Little April then you really have come to the wrong place!

On other matters, I found an old copy of Ste Daley’s blog. Visit ste.html if you fancy a read!

We’ve had a nice weekend. Went to Danson Park yesterday for the yearly “Festival” – Darious was there (I guess he was turned down for Live8) and he couldn’t sing very well live. Back to work tomorrow – weekends don’t last long enough these days.

Bad News: Zombie dogs are going take over the world.

1 Jul

SCIENTISTS have created eerie zombie dogs, reanimating the canines after several hours of clinical death in attempts to develop suspended animation for humans.

Full story

Do these scientists NEVER watch horror films? Who would actually sit down and think that creating zombie dogs is a good idea? They are going to take over the world.

Maybe I’ve been playing Resident Evil a bit too much.

I was reading though some of my old posts when Ste was round last night and came across a few links that I thought I would re-link too.

Firstly, Something Awfull is an extremely funny site. Have a look at the “Cliff” section while you are there, it’ll have you laughing for days.

Secondly, Emotionaneric is a fantastic concept. Only half the site is up after a period of downtime but the main stuff is there; you have to see it to believe it.

I’m pretty tired today, lots of crying by Jacob last night; can’t wait till he’s sleeping though the night!
