Wii or PS3

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

In the US the battle is commencing between Sony and Nintendo for the title of “Best Next Generation Games Console”.

It’s PS3 vs Wii and if you have ever wondered about the differences between the two, the following video will help you decide which you should buy.

I’m most looking forward to the Wii, and Nintendo will have a head start in Europe since Sony were unable to produce enough units to release it in time for Christmas.

MySpace up for sale!

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

You may not have read it here first, but the MySpace domain is offically up for sale, and for only $0.5m!

MySpace SEDO Page

OK - So it’s myspace.co.uk, but with a fair amount of traffic reported on Sedo it will be interesting to see if it sells or not, I also assume you would be quite limited to what you can do with it before the MySpace lawyers get involved.

What Rocked, What Sucked

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Listening to Radio1 at some point in the past I seem to remember a “What Rocked, What Sucked” feature - where a listening will say What Rocked and What Sucked about their weekend.

So, my choice for this weekend is:

What Rocked

  • Getting an email saying the new dedicated server is up and running (within just two days).
  • Qmailrocks - A fantastic website/tutorial which goes over a step by step guide to installing Qmail (a linux mail server) with SpamAssassin and Clam AntiVirus. I did a different tutorial at first, which went a bit “tits up” but after removing the previous install this one was perfect.
  • OpenDNS - A new find after my DNS servers were updating at the speed of a tortuous - changed over to OpenDNS and it fixed the problem, they also have a built-in anti-phishing which is pretty neat.

What Sucked

  • HeartInternet - I’ll rant about this another time.
  • Having the remails of man flu
  • Spending many hours in Linux hell
  • Spending an evening when my kids were at their grandparents tidying the house

All in all quite a productive weekend.

Dedicated Server - Ideal for secondard hosting or staging environments

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Although I’ve only recently changed my hosting, it seems as though I may have made a bad choice as the current hosts are a bit rubbish.

So I’ve been looking at dedicated servers and have found a German host (with a good reputation) with the following offer:

€¢ CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+
€¢ RAM: 1 GB DDR400 RAM
€¢ Duel HDD: 2 x 160 GB SATA HDD
€¢ NIC: 1 GBit OnBoard
€¢ Admin Software: Webmin
€¢ Network Availability: min. 99%
€¢ *Traffic Usage is for free. Restrict the connection speed to 10 MBit/s if 1000 GB/month are exceeded. You can request an activation for 250 GB at a time free of charge in administration interface.
€¢ Free Internal Traffic
€¢ IP Addresses: 6 (subnet 8 )
€¢ 24×7 Email monitoring
€¢ 50GB Backup Space
€¢ Full root access
€¢ Reverse DNS Administration
€¢ Traffic-Statistics
€¢ Free Phone Support
€¢ Free Email Support
€¢ Online Live Support
€¢ Data-Centre 24/365 Stand-by-Service
€¢ Min Contract is 1 month

So - here’s my plan. The cost for the server is $100 (EUR) Setup and $40 (EUR). I am looking to split this cost with 4 other people (5 total users) - it would have to be people i’ve met or know is trustworthy.

I already have one person - so at the moment there are three slots. The maths works out that the setup would be £13.50 each and £5.40 per month.

If anyone is interested in the three avaliable slots please get in touch. Payment would need to be made monthly via bank transfer.

Update: Another person in - two slots left
Update 2: One more in - one left
Last Update - All gone; thanks for the interest

Beware of the Monkey’s

Monkey

The Monkey (well, ok, it’s an ape) in the photo above may look cute. But I warn you, it’s wild and dangerous.

When I was last in Gibraltar (about a month ago) this savage beast decided to try and attack me. Some may say that it is because you should not try and stroke wild monkey’s. Others will say it’s because I’m an easy target. Whatever it is, beware folks.

Ted Leonsis Update..

Friday, November 17th, 2006

Edit: 03/12/06

5 things you didn’t know about Ted Leonsis€¦

1) Ted Leonsis is actually an alien that landed in the Roswell €œincident€ in July 1974. When the US Government decided that Aliens are not vastly different they let them free into the world. Around the same time, Ted, and a few of his friends from UFO, setup AOL and proved that humans really are dump - the reason AOL is so popular.

2) Ted Leonsis once cooked a meal for the Queen of England. He made one of his favourite dishes, a monkey brain and dog stir fry, service with rice. The Queen of England asked for seconds and said it tasted €œrather like chicken€

3) Ted Leonsis advised the President of America to go to war with Iraq. It was a ploy to win more democratic votes as Ted was planning on running for office, but decided against it after being blackmailed about point 1.

4) Ted Leonsis was once a guest star in the popular US hit comedy €œFriends€. He played Chandlers gay housemate in Episode 192

5) Ted Leonsis once played for UK Football side Manchester United, where he was infamous for a €œkung fu€ kick against a Crystal Palace fan. He was later suspended but retains a hero status due to the footballing ability that helped Manchester United lift the FA Cup and win the League title for a record number of years. He now ownes a stake of Chelsea FC and is looking to return to the popular sport.

Interestingly it’s only been three days since my Ted Leonsis post and since the Ted Leonis threadwatch post about his excellent SEO skills.

In a few Google Data centers Wolf Howl (who is in Las Vegas for the Pubcon at the moment) is already showing up on the front page for his Ted Leonis page! To learn more about Ted Leonsis why not visit the Ted Leonsis Wikipedia page.

Edit: 20/11/06

An excellent piece of Ted Leonsis and the vanity searching on thingsthatmakeyougohmm (Ted Leonsis)

And another post by xensen (Ted Leonsis)

Edit: 28/11/06

Ooops. I almost forgot about Ted. Wolf Howl has now created a Ted Leonsis SEO Contest! Nice.

US TV - Heroes

Friday, November 17th, 2006

It’s happened a few times, reading through forums on the net somewhere I come across the details of a TV show that’s running in the US (which always seems to have the good shows before us) downloaded a few episodes and become addicted to it. I end up having a marathon session and feel tired for the rest of the next day.

It happened with 24, it happened with Lost, it happened with Prison break and now it’s happened with Heroes.

Billed as €œan epic drama that chronicles the lives of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary abilities€ it’s a bit like a darker TV version of X-Men.

You can see the trailer for the series via YouTube below - I would definitely give it a go.
