How to spammers find our sites so quickly?

22 Jan

I know that blog spammers need to stay ahead of the game, etc, but I do wonder how on earth they find my sites so damn quickly?

With my Diet blog, I received my first spam (or pingback) within 24 hours of the site going live and today, after linking for the first time to the poker community site that I have been building, I now have two new spam blogs!

How on earth do they find them?  I wonder if they go crawling through sites such as the a4u or if it’s all automated?

Playing with vlogs

3 Jan

As regular readers will already know (after the Christmas Post) I have been experimenting with online videos recently and have now setup my first vlog (video blog) – a personal project called Diet Blog TV.

The site is a bit of an experiment as I want to know a few answers to the following:

  1. How easy is it to setup a vlog in Wordpress
  2. How easy is it to distribute video via channels like YouTube, MySpace Video, Facebook, etc
  3. How easy it is to get listed as a video podcast in iTunes
  4. What the best ways of driving traffic to a vlog are

I’ve only put up one (non-video) post at the moment but aim to get the first video diary up at the end of the week.

The site is not setup as a commercial site so doesn’t have any ads (for the moment at least there are no plans to do so either) and is just a bit of fun so please feel free to have a gander and let me know what you think as I get more videos online – maybe you even want to link to it for me!

Replaced iPod – kudos to Apple

2 Jan

Just before Christmas I got one of the new ipod nanos and it’s fair to say that they are very, very good – it’s the first time I’ve got an ipod as I’ve always had an alternative manufacturer and up until boxing day it was all going well.

Then a disaster happened – I didn’t take the ipod out of my trousers before my wife put them in the wash and… you’ve guessed it, around the washing machine it went. Iit wasn’t until the clothes were put out to dry before finding out what had happened – my ipod was destroyed.

Today I booked an appointment at the ipod clinic at our local apple store in London and showed the problem to a friendly apple technician – he explained that it looked like water had got to the unit (no, really?!) and said that while he was not meant to replace units damaged like this (as putting it through the wash is not covered by the warranty) he was in a good mood and did it anyway.

So thank you apple – I promise that I’ll make sure it is kept safer in the future and that my wife doesn’t get near it!
